### Meal train schedule

Example: every other day for two weeks, dinner for four, dropped off at 5:30 p.m.

| Date | Cook | Idea |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Open | Soup or chili, with bread |
| Day 3 | Open | Baked pasta or enchiladas |
| Day 5 | Open | Roast chicken with vegetables |
| Day 7 | Open | Breakfast basket: muffins, granola, fruit |
| Day 9 | Open | Curry or dal, rice packed separately |
| Day 11 | Open | Grain bowls, kept separate |
| Day 13 | Open | Sheet-pan dinner |

- Label every dish: name, ingredients and allergens, date made, how to reheat.
- Reheat casseroles and leftovers to 165°F; bring soups to a boil.
- Perishables out of the fridge no more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F).
- Text when you're on the way. Keep drop-offs to five minutes unless invited in.

## How to use the planner

1. **Ask the family first.** Check, directly or through a close friend, that they want meals and how often. Some want dinner three nights a week; others want two weeks of freezer meals and then quiet.
2. **Fill in the basics.** Dates, rhythm, household size, drop-off time and any allergies. Every other day often works best, because leftovers cover the gaps.
3. **Add helpers, or leave it open.** Names are assigned in turn. Leave the list blank to get open slots people can claim.
4. **Share it.** Copy the text into a group chat or email, print it for the fridge, or download the calendar file so each meal lands in everyone's calendar.

Dish ideas rotate through freezer-friendly and fresh options from our [complete meal train guide](https://magnanimo.us/meal-train/), so the family doesn't get lasagna five nights in a row. Cooking for six when you usually cook for two? The [PantryRx web planner](https://pantryrx.ai/app/) scales recipes and builds the shopping list, and [PantryRx publishes new recipes every day](https://pantryrx.ai/recipes/) if you need inspiration.

## Food safety on a meal train

Meals travel, sit on porches and get reheated days later. The numbers that matter, from the [FDA's safe food handling guidance](https://www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/safe-food-handling):

| Rule | Number |
|---|---|
| Poultry, casseroles and leftovers cooked or reheated to | 165°F |
| Refrigerator / freezer | 40°F or below / 0°F or below |
| Perishables out of the fridge, max | 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F) |
| Soups, sauces, gravies when reheating | Bring to a boil |

The FDA lists nine [major food allergens](https://www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-food-labeling-and-critical-foods/food-allergies): milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. Any you tick appear at the top of the printed schedule.

## Frequently asked questions

**How long should a meal train last?**

Ask the family. Two to three weeks is common for a new baby. For long illnesses, a lighter schedule over months, such as two meals a week, often helps more than a short burst.

**Do I need an account?**

No. The planner runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded; share the schedule by copying, printing or downloading the calendar file.

**What does the calendar file do?**

It's a standard .ics file. Open it on a phone or computer to add every meal slot to Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook, with the drop-off time and notes.

**What if a helper can't cook?**

Takeout delivery, a grocery gift card, rides, dog walking or yard work count just as much. The [help beyond meals](https://magnanimo.us/meal-train/#beyond-meals) list has more ideas.
