# Make A Difference Day: the fourth Saturday of October, and the idea that one day is enough to start

A Sunday newspaper magazine turned one October Saturday into a national day of service. The sponsors have moved on. The idea still works.

Today is the fourth Saturday of October, which for a quarter century meant something specific in a lot of American towns: Make A Difference Day. Churches painted shelters, scout troops raked yards, and whole cities organized dozens of projects at once. The idea behind it was disarmingly modest. You don't have to commit to a lifetime of volunteering. Just give one day.

## A newspaper's idea

Make A Difference Day was created in 1992 by *USA Weekend*, the Sunday magazine Gannett distributed inside hundreds of local newspapers, according to the [magazine's history](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_Weekend). Points of Light, the volunteer nonprofit, became its partner. In 2011, Points of Light [wrote](https://www.pointsoflight.org/blog/change-notes-three-million-give-back-make-difference-day/) that "for more than two decades" it had worked with *USA Weekend* to sponsor the day, and it counted "three million volunteers who joined together in service" that October.

Projects ranged from the small to the startling. Covering a 2014 project at Covenant House in Washington, D.C., Points of Light [called the event](https://www.pointsoflight.org/blog/lesson-how-service-works-make-difference-day/) "the nation's largest day of doing good and caring for others." Volunteers there built libraries for residents, assembled hundreds of toiletry kits, and sorted tens of thousands of clothing items.

## After the magazine

*USA Weekend* published its last issue in December 2014. By 2017 the broadcast company TEGNA was presenting the day. Points of Light's [2017 preview](https://www.pointsoflight.org/blog/how-will-you-make-difference-make-difference-day/) said the event, "now in its 26th year," was "made possible by TEGNA," held "on the fourth Saturday of October," and drew "tens of thousands of volunteers across the country." Fourteen project leaders each year received a $10,000 grant for the charity they served.

The 2016 honorees show how far one Saturday can stretch. A 12-year-old named Maggie Leach started Operation Share the Load for families who couldn't afford laundry, and collected $810 in quarters plus 21 baskets of supplies for a shelter. In Pickens County, South Carolina, about 500 volunteers built 13 tiny houses for homeless neighbors in a single day. In Mesa, Arizona, nearly 3,000 residents took on 36 projects.

An honest note: in recent years the national campaign has gone quiet. We couldn't find a national sponsor promoting it for 2026, and its old web address now leads to a domain-sale page. Your town may still hold events, so it's worth a quick look. Either way, nobody needs permission to hold a day of service.

## Why one day works

A single day sounds too small to matter, but it removes the biggest barrier to volunteering: the open-ended commitment. A Saturday with a start and an end time is easy to say yes to. A group project lets you bring a friend, a kid or a coworker. If today goes well, our [volunteering guide](https://magnanimo.us/volunteering/) covers how to find something regular that fits.

## Today's act

**The act:** Hold your own Make A Difference Day. Block two hours today and give them to someone else.

- Find a one-time shift near you on [VolunteerMatch](https://www.volunteermatch.org/), [JustServe](https://www.justserve.org/) or [Idealist](https://www.idealist.org/en/volunteer). Food banks often have Saturday sorting shifts.
- Do a block cleanup: grab gloves and a trash bag and walk your street, a park or a creek bank.
- Pick a neighbor who could use a hand, an older person or a new parent, and offer a specific chore: raking leaves, cleaning gutters, a grocery run.
